Digital Art | Artist Statement

Even though I grew up around computers (learning how to create a simple program in BASIC in the early 80s) and had a career in Information Technology in the late 90s, graphic design was still a new field when I entered college and digital art was practically non-existent. In fact, I only recently became interested in the power of digital drawing after seeing the recent iPad drawings by famed artist, David Hockney. Seeing a painter move into the digital art field was freeing. I realized I didn’t need to be an illustrator or a master of complex software or digital drawing toolboxes in order to benefit from the freedom of digital mark-making. So, after recently acquiring a new iPad and digital pen, I decided to load up Procreate and play with this new-to-me medium. In the process, I created a series of new digital pieces for my “Fractured Stories of Hope” show. In 2022, I decided to double down on my efforts and work on a single piece every day, all year long (managing to make it halfway through the year before becoming distracted by other artistic endeavors.)
