Digital Art | Artist Statement
Even though I grew up around computers (learning how to create a simple program in BASIC in the early 80s) and had a career in Information Technology in the late 90s, graphic design was still a new field when I entered college, and digital art was practically non-existent. In fact, I only recently became interested in the power of digital drawing after seeing iPad drawings by famed artist David Hockney. Seeing a painter move into the digital art field was freeing. I realized I didn’t need to be an illustrator or a master of complex software or digital drawing toolboxes to benefit from the freedom of digital mark-making. So, after recently acquiring a new iPad and digital pen, I decided to load up Procreate and play with this new-to-me medium. In the process, I created a series of new digital pieces for my “Fractured Stories of Hope” show. In 2022, I decided to double down on my efforts and work on a single piece every day, all year long (managing to make it halfway through the year before becoming distracted by other artistic endeavors.) “Beyond Time” is one of the limited edition prints resulting from this project. In 2024, I combined photographic images into my digital art-making, including vintage photos and those I had captured myself. Combining these efforts with printmaking led me to the series “True Prophesies,” where I hope to continue exploring different aspects of these mediums.
This signed book by artist and author Jennifer Lommers features the photographic inspirations of her art practice, with notes on the elements of design and composition that fuel her creative curiosity. With more than 100 beautiful full-color images, this book offers an elegant approach to capturing moments of beauty every day through an act as simple as a 15-minute walk with a phone or camera.
About this book
”This collection of photographs (alongside a selection of the art they inspired) spans more than a decade of noticing the small details, patterns, moments of beauty and mundanity that fall into view within the simple act of attention. As a painter and then mixed media artist, I brought these moments back to my studio and used them to inspire me - sometimes literally, and often, spiritually. They gave me an opportunity to be creative when my energy was insufficient to complete the smallest tasks and propelled me to cover large canvases in times of creative abundance. I share them now as a means to… offer the reader a view of an artist’s inner dialogue between what we see, imagine, and create - of a life, translated as art, in whatever form that takes.” ~ Jennifer
