Explorations of Chaos & Order
Original Mixed-Media & Collage Art

This ongoing series combines the energies of chaos and order. Using elements from an antique book purchase, ‘The Origin of Species’ by Charles Darwin, I am using this context to consider how the universe breaks down, reforms and renews. Fabric pattern papers form the template of creation. Parchment paper simulates animal hides as commentary on our destruction and monetization of environments, while the loose threads and stitches speak to the care needed to piece together a future - to survive, heal, nurture, and love.

Material choices were made within this theme - choosing Gouache for painted elements as a centuries-old water-based media; plant-based binders for collage elements to avoid petrochemicals; parchment paper as an evolutionary product originally made from animal hides moving to modern production using plant cellulose fibers; and repurposing existing book pages, fiber scraps, paper patterns, and thrifted supplies.

"Origin of Species Experiment No. 240021" (above) and No. 240012 (below) combine imagery from multiple plates featured in Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species" to form unique animal hybrids.

"Are You My Mother?" combines imagery from multiple plates featured in Charles Darwin's "Origin of Species" to form its own animal hybrid. The antique frame originally held a pencil drawing of Lommers' great-great Aunt in "Time and Place Will Not Tear Us Apart - Letters from Norland", as seen HERE.
