A Mixed Media Collage using oil paint, artist crayon, copic marker, India ink, thread, vintage book pages, linen, Yupo paper, printmaking paper, and metal T-pins.
*What is experimental art?
With these pieces, I play with multiple media combined in ways not fully tested. I use artisan quality materials, where appropriate (cold wax and wheat paste for adhesion, lightfast oil paints, and India ink), but I honestly don’t know how these pieces will age by adding vintage papers and found objects and materials. As such, I price these pieces lower than market value. If any issues arise with the work, I will naturally offer my assistance to resolve them or will take back the piece for full store credit. As a very small business, however, I find it difficult to offer full refunds. I sincerely appreciate collectors willing and able to support experimental work but understand it is not for everyone. I am also happy to provide additional photos or answer any questions or concerns prior to purchase.

Artist Statement:
“This piece was inspired by a trip to Playa Summer Lake in Southeast Oregon. The bird depicted is based on a short-eared owl sighting near one of the ridges along this magnificent basin. The owl, a frequent day-time flyer, was keeping a close eye on us hikers due to its nearby nest. I’ve used a variety of watercolor pigments in the background, including some natural colors which I ground from rocks within the basin. The more vibrant colors are painted with Daniel Smith watercolors. I hope you enjoy.”

Artist Statement:
This past year I spent many hours walking and running one particular trail in the MacDonald Forest beginning at the Lewisburg Saddle. I recorded 18 runs (with many more walks unrecorded) from October 16 to April 30, logging over 78 miles in the rain, snow, fog, and even a little sunshine. Here I found the time I needed for reflection, renewal, and gratitude for the gifts of this forest wonderland.
In recognition and remembrance - included in this painting is a visual recording stitched with golden threads of the steps taken along the forest path with the journal entries made during this time transcribed and collaged beneath. Showcasing a section of the elevation map of the Lewisburg Saddle along Nettleton and Davies Roads, the striations of color follow the contours of the map from SW to NE. The story of healing flows over time from sun to moon, ground to sky, soothing the chaos I felt during this time. Fittingly, the elevation of the path naturally has the shape of a heartbeat - one that I found in rhythm with my own, helping me to relish the small pleasures nature can bring with sightings of nuthatches, newts, coral mushrooms, and horsetails, even on the quietest and darkest days. The hours spent on this path will be carried in my heart now and for all my days ahead.
